A community owned shop is one in which there is community involvement in the setting up and/or the running of the shop. They are part of a growing number of businesses known as social enterprises. The Plunkett Foundation

Why a community shop, café and petrol station for Tre’rddol ?

The village shop is somewhere to meet, share gossip and news - and saves money on travel too
Surveys show a local shop adds value to neighbouring properties
New opportunities to sell local produce grown or made by local people
Less travelling for essentials helps the planet too

In 2010 there were 250 community-owned shops in England, Scotland and Wales. 97% of projects attempted have been successful. Many have a café and some include a petrol station and other services. Most have some paid staff. ALL depend on volunteers.

Run by the community, for the community:

Volunteer work - reduces costs
Everyone has a stake - increasing enthusiasm and support
Profits - money goes back into the business
Grants - help fund the business
Sustainability - helps the environment
